The Milky Way [c] is the galaxy that includes the Solar System, with the name describing the galaxy's appearance from Earth: a hazy band of light seen in the night sky formed from stars that cannot be individually distinguished by the naked eye.

Entsprechend ihrer Form als flache Scheibe, die aus Hunderten von Milliarden Sternen besteht, ist die Milchstraße von der Erde aus als bandförmige Aufhellung am Nachthimmel sichtbar, die sich über 360° auf der Himmelskugel erstreckt. Ihrer Struktur nach zählt die Milchstraße zu den Balkenspiralgalaxien .
