In Guild Wars 2 kann der Spieler zwischen neun verschiedenen Klassen wählen, die sich in drei Soldaten-, drei Abenteurer- und drei Gelehrtenklassen aufteilen. Durch die Erweiterung Heart of Thorns wird die dritte Soldatenklassen ( Wiedergänger) freigeschaltet. Die Art der Waffen und Rüstung wird durch die Wahl bestimmt.
