It was built in 1931 by Bethlehem Shipbuilders at Quincy, the United States for the Oceanic Steam Ship Company of Los Angeles. During World War II it was used as a troop transport. In 1954 it was purchased by the Home lines, renamed HOMERIC and used on the North Atlantic and Caribbean trade routes.

This charming museum has three rooms featuring exhibits on life in during the gold rush and life in the local area. There are exhibits with perspectives from miners, lawmen, local shopkeepers, women, children, and Chinese immigrants and native Miwok people.
