    Each year all Crankstart Scholars are encouraged to complete 25 hours of volunteering work, for example by taking part in activities to encourage students to apply to Oxford, or by supporting the local community.     The Crankstart Scholarship has supported over 2,500 scholars since its inception and you will be joining a growing community of students across all subjects and colleges. This provides opportunities for you to meet others and mingle at informal and formal events, including the Welcome Reception and Scholars Ball.

    If you have ever been in care, or are estranged from your family, you will be eligible to apply for an additional non-repayable annual bursary of up to £3,000 to help towards financial shortfalls identified in your application and relating to your circumstances. You can apply for this support for each year of your course.

    If you choose not to accept your Crankstart Scholarship offer you will be assessed for an Oxford Bursaryinstead.

  2. Crankstart Scholarship provides financial and on-course support for UK resident students from low-income backgrounds. Learn about the eligibility, bursary levels, additional benefits and contact details of the Programme.

Grants ranged in size from $100,000 to $10,000,000 and went to 305 organizations. ~28% went to Democracy; ~23% to Economic Mobility; ~22% to Education; ~22% to Housing Security; ~3% to Environment; ~1% to Medical Science & Innovation; and ~1% to other urgent causes. A sampling of our 2023 grants is listed below.

  4. The Crankstart Internship Programme is facilitated by the Internship Office. The features of the Programme include: Exclusive internships just for Crankstart Scholars. A weekly bulletin highlighting internships and career opportunities as well as events of interest/available to Scholars.

  5. Crankstart Scholars receive careers support from the University of Oxford, including exclusive internships, bursaries and mentoring. Learn how to apply for internships, get one-to-one advice and explore different career paths with Crankstart.

  6. Taking place three times a year, the Crankstart Career Development Programme covers everything from how to generate career ideas through to career essentials such as CVs, and will be introducing you to the many resources that will help you on your career path.
