NPN-Sensoren werden „Tauchsensoren“ genannt, weil sie am Ausgang sinken. NPN und PNP sind Fachbegriffe für den Transistortyp, der zum Schalten des Ausgangs verwendet wird.
Sensoren mit PNP- oder NPN-Ausgang sind als 3-Leiter aufgebaut (+Vs, output und 0 V) und funktionieren mit Gleichstrom (DC). Bei PNP-Sensoren liegt der Lastwiderstand zwischen output und 0 V (pull-down Widerstand), während dieser bei NPN-Sensoren zwischen +Vs und output liegt (pull-up Widerstand).
NPN-Sensor: Bei NPN-Sensoren wird die Last mit dem Schaltausgang und V+ verbunden; V+ ist der Bezugspunkt. Wird am Sensor ein Signalwechsel herbeigeführt, schaltet der Transistor durch, Strom fließt von V+ über die Last durch den Transistor zu V−, wodurch der Stromkreis geschlossen wird.
