All baboons have long, dog-like muzzles, heavy, powerful jaws with sharp canine teeth, close-set eyes, thick fur except on their muzzles, short tails, and rough spots on their protruding buttocks, called ischial callosities.

The baboon model promises to contribute significantly to our understanding of the mechanisms that determine the number and positioning of teeth. Agenesis and supernumerary teeth in baboons have yet to be studied, although there is anecdotal evidence from the SNPRC colony suggesting that such an investigation would be informative.
