Chaos has overtaken Chicago, there are smashed buildings all around us, and only one man -- and one giant albino gorilla -- can save the day!

In this case, Chicago is actually an outdoor set built in Atlanta for the new film Rampage, and the man in question, primatologist Davis Okoye, is played by none other than Dwayne Johnson. And while the aforementioned gorilla, named “George” in the film, isn’t present on set at the moment -- the special effects experts at Weta will make sure that’s remedied by the time the movie is in theaters -- it was hard not to grin as giant wind machines blew debris everywhere, making the chaos feel a bit more genuine, while Johnson as Davis surveyed the scene, looked up at George, and intoned, in the way Johnson was born to do, “Ready to kick some ass?”

Johnson brought up one particularly demanding scene set on a C-17 involving himself, Harris, and a character played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan and recalled, "It was 12 hours every day, and finally Naomie and I are like this [mimes falling asleep with exhaustion]…. And she’s like, “F**k, man, this is tough!”

Said Harris, “They actually created a helicopter on a rig so that when we were crashing it actually feels like you’re crashing... We’re like on harnesses and pretending that the back is blown out, and we’re being strung up from the ceiling. I mean I’ve done action movies before, obviously, with Bond and other movies like that, but never anything like this. It’s all been literally insane. Even like shooting the film here [in Atlanta], where this building is supposed to have come down, and you see the debris and the destruction – it’s a mad movie!”

As we were finishing our conversation, I asked Johnson if it’s as fun as it looks to get to say something so classic Action Movie Hero as “Let’s go kick some ass,” and he replied, “It’s awesome, man! I still feel like I’m a big kid at heart. I certainly act like it at times, and at the end of the day, we’re on this treadmill of life and it just goes, and we're all trying to do good and do our job, and hopefully put in good work and learn from our mistakes... All the things we check off our boxes every day. But at the end of the day, I feel like we’ve got the best job in the world. We love what we do, we’re here in Hollywood, we’re on this big soundstage, and it’s total destruction, and I’m looking up at this giant albino gorilla, who’s my best friend, asking 'Ready to kick some ass?’ I’m sign languaging, and he’s like, ‘Yeah.’ It’s the best! it’s very cool, and I never take it for granted."
