Chasiv Yar as a notable settlement can be traced back to 1876 when a Russian noble established refractory site to process local clay that is abundant in the area. Originally known as Hruzke or Pleshcheieve, the settlement grew alongside the clay industry.
The hilltop city of Chasiv Yar has served as a front-line stronghold on the eastern front since 20 May 2023, when the Russian Armed Forces captured the neighboring city of Bakhmut, located 10 km (6 miles) to the east.
