Der Parque Natural da Ria Formosa ist ein Naturpark um eine Lagune an der südportugiesischen Algarve. Die Lagune ist mit einer geschützten Fläche von 170 km² eines der größten lagunaren Schutzgebiete Europas.
The Ria Formosa is a coastal lagoon with a seaward belt of sandbars and islands protecting a shallow lagoon system. Specifically, it is a tidal lagoon which means it is regularly flooded by the sea’s tides. The tides are entirely responsible for the water circulation inside the lagoon.
The Ria Formosa Natural Park stretches for close to 60 kilometers (nearly 40 miles) along the southeastern coast of Portugal, from Faro to Tavira. It’s a maze of islands, sandbars, lagoons, canals and marshes that change size and shape depending on the currents and tides.
Designated as a natural park in 1987, Ria Formosa Nature Reserve is celebrated for its unique blend of ecosystems, comprising barrier islands, sand dunes, salt marshes, lagoons, and tidal flats.
